Will You Birth with Ease or Effort?

by Alicia Nicole Waters

When it comes to birthing a business there are several dynamics that come into play just like the birthing of an actual baby.  There are several preparatory steps of planning and aligned positioning that have to take place in order for things to go as smooth as possible.

Though, we can’t control every factor of the process, we must make sure that we are ready to proceed and course correct along the way.

When it’s time for a new level of your business to launch, like a woman who is ready to give birth, we want to make sure that the process can one of ease and not a lot of effort. Though in the birthing process for delivering a child, it requires pushing and some level of pain even with anesthesia.  Often a woman’s labor experience will go as smooth as her preparation process during her pregnancy.

This involves how she took care of herself, enrolled support for before and after, along with practicing Lamaze will provide her with an experience that will assist her with birthing with ease.  With business it is the same, your business labor day of launching your new endeavors can be one of ease if you incorporate and apply some of the same basic principles named above.

You have to ask yourself the question…As a Business owner do I want to birth my business endeavors with ease or through effort?  If your ego believes that you must remain being a control freak/micro manager or subscribe to the paradigm of everything must be hard in order to achieve success, then you will find yourself grinding, hustling and trying to make things happen through a lot of massive action and effort instead of grace and ease.

Though birthing a new or next level of your business has it’s work cut out, it doesn’t mean that it has to be a long hard journey, especially when you’ve enrolled team and not stressed yourself along with implementing proper self-care.

So ask yourself the question:  “Do I desire to birth my business endeavors with ease or with effort?  There is no right or wrong answer, there’s only the power of choice.  Either way you will be able to successfully launch your business, however, it’s just a matter of determining whether you want your delivery process to be with ease or through hard work.

If you wish to learn more about this birthing process, please check out our Tea Topics interview with Alicia on Thursday, September 18th @ 2 PM PT/ 4 PM CT/ 5 PM ET. http://www.tomasamacapinlac.com/tea-topics-with-tomasa

The #1 Mistake Holistic Practitioners Make When Talking About Their Signature Work

I’ve done it, and I bet you do it too!

I get it – you’re an intelligent being, and you want people to know you’re intelligent because either you were vilified in a past life for being some type of healer, or today, especially in the United States, the work you do is considered woo woo, and to be honest, kind of out there. So when you talk with someone about what it is that you do, you use technical terms or modality jargon that the general public doesn’t get.

When we talk with others about our work, we must break it down and use layman’s terms; we have to speak their language. Because let’s face it, when you speak in modality jargon, you might as well be speaking a foreign tongue.

The Key to Unlocking that “Yes!”

It’s true ─ it’s crucial! Without this key component, you might as well kiss your sales success goodbye.

When I am consciously selling, I hardly ever put my offer on the table upfront for someone to buy. I mean, really, it’s the last thing you do to get a Yes from a client.

Selling is embedded in our everyday conversations, and sometimes the offer is delayed.

There are five elements that I teach when selling, and one of them I used recently while connecting on the phone with a customer service representative from a major department store that got me a Yes to get a late charge removed from my bill. Was I selling myself to her? Most definitely!

What’s brand got to do with it?

…Or, why branding yourself is important.

By 2010, I had survived this healing business for 13 years as Tomasa’s Healing Arts. I had decided a few years before that, that I was ready to take my healing business to the next level.

This is what it entailed:

  • No longer leading with modality when telling people what I did
  • Making offers when I taught mini-classes
  • Building a community of clients virtually, as well as in-person
  • Putting out my first product that I would market and sell online
  • Joint-venturing with another healer to grow our businesses
  • Writing sizzling, hot copy
  • Giving my business a professional look with office policies, forms and the like
  • Stepping up my dress to stand in my value as a professional
  • Branding myself

Are you part of the culture of scarcity?

As part of our upcoming conversation about shifting your relationship with money, here is a glimpse of what my August Tea Topics with Tomasa guest will be exploring…check out the guest post below by Johanna Lyman, CEO of Opening Pandora’s Box

In this week’s Story of Truth and Hope, it’s coming down on the side of Truth.

moneythumbIt is time for us to collectively say NO to our culture of scarcity. You know me – I’ve been teaching that we live in an abundant universe for over a decade now, and it’s high time we started acting like it.

In this week’s video, Lynne Twist talks about the 3 toxic myths of our scarcity culture. It’s powerful stuff, and as you might imagine, I’ve got a thing or two to say about it. It’s well worth the 8:44 of your time.

Three Ways to Get Ideal Prospective Clients and Have Your Phone Ringing Off the Hook

omming photo for blog article

Ommm…

Let’s face it ─ you can omm all you want and you can visualize too.

God says, let there be light, and there is light. Yet, none of this seems to work for you.

One of the things that I have learned over the years and even as I shifted my focus as a holistic business mentor, is that you must, yes, visualize and ask for what you want but you must also get into action.

So You Want to Be Successful?

As part of our upcoming conversation about shadows showing up and how to harness light to change them and keep the fire in your business going, here is a sneak peek at what my July Tea Topics with Tomasa guest will be divulging…check out the guest post below by Jodee Chizever, Soul Path Facilitator

Success.

A powerful word that conjures up many different images.

In the past 3 years I have lost and kept off 40 lbs. I feel very successful because of this AND it has not always been a straight easy path.

The past year my business has doubled in size. I feel very successful because of this AND it has not always been a straight easy path.

My two little kids are happy children (for the most part, they are kids after all!) and because of this I feel successful, AND it is most definitely not always easy.

The three R’s of dealing with negativity (a.k.a. shadows) in your life and in your business

Recently, I asked someone if they were willing to be interviewed on a topic I am writing my book about (which I’m not ready to reveal to the general public just yet). She declined. The problem is that she didn’t want to talk about the subject because, truth be told, she’s still got some healing to do around it.

Here’s what I know: when you can freely and openly talk about those shadowy parts of yourself, you have mastered a level of healing where you are no longer allowing SHAME to bind you.

Symptoms: An Alternative Perspective

As part of our upcoming conversation about wellness, allergies, and the parts they play in business, check out this special post by my guest blogger and May Tea Topics with Tomasa guest…Dr. Jill Cohn, Chiropractor

allergyAs I help more people eliminate a wide variety of health symptoms, it has become clear to me that two people with the same symptoms may be reacting to different allergens, and need very different remedies. For example, patients suffering with a skin rash or eczema may be sensitive to dairy, wheat, other foods, household chemicals, prescription drugs, or an animal. While one person’s skin rash may look identical to that of another person, this does not mean that their suffering has the same cause or solution.

Six Tips to Stop Fear of Rejection in its Tracks

As part of our upcoming conversation about rejection and alternatives to fearing rejection in sales, check out this special post by my guest blogger and April Tea Topics with Tomasa guest…Penny Sampson, F.I.E.R.C.E. Leadership Life-Stylist

Tell me: what would it be like to live your life without being swallowed up by the concern or need to be liked and accepted, or to constantly please others? What if being yourself as you are – right here and now, flaws and all – was enough? Can you imagine the liberation? What you could accomplish, create, or do with your life?

The possibilities are limitless! The irony is, we know this; we’ve heard it before. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, and Oscar Wilde said “Be yourself – everyone else is already taken.” So why do we still continue to feel the stifling FEAR of rejection, the need to please others, and the desire to be what they want us to be, instead of being who we authentically are (quirks & blemishes included)?

The #1 Fear of Sales and How to Turn It Around

Most people fear sales, and especially holistic practitioners! As a matter of fact, I would say this is the case for any heart-centered entrepreneur. Why do you think heart-centered business owners fear sales? Yes, you got it…they don’t want to be REJECTED. Do you like to be rejected? I know I don’t, which is why many of us heart-centered entrepreneurs sometimes take rejection very personally. More often than not, rejection conjures up feelings of self-doubt, fear, and inadequacy.

I’ve been consciously selling since 1988, whether it has been selling for a big corporation like Motorola or HP or for my own services and products, and I want you to know that I still feel a tinge of sadness when I get the big “No”, especially when I’ve invested my heart into helping someone. What I know is that when you reflect and get over receiving the answer “No,” you have the opportunity to evaluate why it was a No.

How can you step up your value with dress?

Dressing for success is no joke.

Even when you are a holistic practitioner building a private practice, your dress matters. The truth is, people size you up the first thirty seconds they look at you. They look at your way of being, which includes your dress and how you talk. Let me ask you: is it with confidence, or are you unsure of yourself?

Today I want to address your dress. It’s at the forefront of my mind because recently I was making an assessment with one of my mentees about her current business and where she wants to go. I asked her what she charges and what she wants to charge. From this, I told her what she needs to be charging. Her responses carried a slight chasm within all of them. Then something in me came forth, and I asked her what she wears when she works on clients.

Her response: yoga pants.

Heal Your Cash Flow Woes

As a healer, I find that we have a lot of our own healing to do, especially when it comes to our own money issues and how they are shaped by mindset and love (or lack thereof). What is the saying…“We help others with what we need to heal for ourselves.” I find that many healers project their own money issues onto their potential or existing clients by assuming that their clients don’t have the money to invest, or won’t find the services valuable enough to invest in their services for themselves.

Here is one thing I am sure of – clients seem to cough up enough money to do some pretty frivolous things: take an extravagant trip to some exotic place like the Greek Isles or to Hawaii (or maybe they own an airplane that needs some maintenance on it). So why not be proactive and encourage them to take care of the temple that they overwork, stress out and deplete of energy on a daily basis? And why not BE a part of that process? Here’s the truth – if they don’t maintain and take care of this body temple, it will no doubt break down just like brakes wear out on a car.

Stand in your worth: how to stop trading dollars for hours

This is the final piece to my blog post series where I have been addressing what to charge for your services. Here’s the deal – you can’t put a price tag on the results that your clients get because they are priceless. When you alleviate their backache, this helps pull them out of their pain and in return, they are able to go to work and earn a living…and oh, let’s not say how it solves their irritable disposition in their relationships.

By helping them, their demeanor shifts and everything pops back into harmony and balance, and not to mention the renewal of energy they have once they are out of pain. So what kind of price tag do you put on all these intangible things?

I know it’s difficult. You are essentially helping someone get their life back when you help them solve a specific challenge. Note: I like to use the word ‘challenge’ because if we have a problem and label it, we are giving in to the label or disharmony itself, so I am going to use ‘challenge’…or better yet, project.

Do you see why charging under $100 per hour just isn’t you standing in your value? What would a person pay for years of therapy if they had to deal with the repercussions of their physical pain? Are you getting my drift?

Aligning your Fees with your Soul as a Gifted Healer

Last week I dipped our toes in a bit about the mindset of trading, and how it keeps us from owning our true value and being able do some of the concrete things that we need to survive and thrive as human beings.

This week, I want you to look at how to get in touch with what your soul feels you should charge.

From trading, to being paid abundantly for your services as a gifted healer

I hear and see it all the time among my friends, my clients (mentees), and in many healing communities ─ healers often trade their services with another healer or another service provider. And yes, I must confess, that I have been there and still go there from time to time. And then I have to remember to practice what I preach.

Don’t get me wrong…trading can be quite beneficial, but I want you to look at the mindset it suggests. It’s like a direct communication to the Universe: I want more trades because I am willing to trade my services. Does that ring true for you? Here’s are some hard-line questions for you, and I want you to answer them honestly.

Walking Your Talk

Walking your talk is living on brand! Now that is authenticity.

People signing up with you want to know that you are the real deal. They want to know that they can relate to you, but they also want to trust that they can count on you to bring them to the place they want to be (a.k.a. results). As a gifted healer, it is your job to not only show up with your gifts ─ it is your job to be YOU. Show you, the real you, not the person you think people want to see.

Ask yourself: what you tell your clients to do, do you practice it too?

Collaboration is the key

I am having the time of my life collaborating with other heart-centered business owners!

In my four-part video series, I talk about how to eliminate competition. Plainly put, competition comes from a place of lack. Clients are attracted to practitioners who are a good match for them—period. Clients appreciate that you have resources for them. I send clients—past, present, and potential—to other practitioners who do similar things to what I do all the time. It may very well be that another practitioner is better suited for the challenge that they face. Knowing what your clients’ needs are and how best to support them, is where collaboration emerges.

Are you shaking in your boots about having a sales conversation with a potential client?

When I mention the word “sales”, how does that make you feel?

Many heart-centered business owners, especially healers, want to run the other way. What if I told you that every conversation you have is a sales conversationSales is a life skill. We are constantly selling our ideas and things that we want in our life. Sales is built off of relationships.

The importance of self-care for all healers, holistic practitioners, heart-centered biz owners

Self-care is my soapbox. Has always and will always be a part of me.

It is deeply ingrained that I want to make sure that you get how important it is for you. Not to mention that it is something that I am always working on expanding and taking it up a notch or even deeper.

Recently, I had an encounter with someone I’ve known a long time in my life from my high school days (that’s over 30 years) who is a hypnotherapist/intuitive medium. That’s considered a healer, right? Well healers need healing, and you need constant clearing so that you can be there for your peeps and your loved ones, but really, the number one person you need to be there for is YOU. The truth is that if you can’t be there for you, then you really can’t come from this place of LOVE for your peeps.

Gratitude is the attitude to melt resistance and attract what you want!

When running your business, it’s important to celebrate and appreciate everything.

After all, it’s about the energy of everything. “What’s not going right” are the shadows coming up for the light to shine upon them…which means something BIG is coming. This is about embracing all of you—the good, the bad, the ugly and the pretty. When you lean into the shadows, you get through the dark soul of the journey much faster. Resistance just buys you more time to wallow in the shadows because even if you choose to ignore them, they show up unconsciously, perhaps as those obstacles.

Recently, I participated in an invitation-only event with six-figure and seven-figure conscious business entrepreneurs. One of the things we talked about was playing with each other at the level of full disclosure. On the second day of the event, I was asked if I wanted to play at this level. Of course I said Yes. (Honestly, if you asked me that three or four years ago, I’m not sure I would have said yes.)

So I was called on to share: what was it that I didn’t want anyone to know about me? On the stage in front of seventy people, I got to share one of my most humiliating experiences. After that share, my voicemail rang with a message from a potential client who had been trying to make a decision about whether or not to work with me. I recognized that this was her “Yes!” Do you see the magic in all of this? I cleared something that had been eating away at me, and the clients started to magnetize themselves to me.

Are your Numbers Where You Want Them to BE?

accounting

I love playing with numbers. I am a natural mathematician or shall I say arithmetician. Perhaps as a healer, sometimes you don’t want to look at this analytical part of your business because either:

 1)   it’s too painful to look at reality or

 2)   perhaps it’s a skill set that you don’t own.

It’s what could make or break your business. Keeping track of your numbers is important so you know exactly where you stand in your business. Some of the things that may run through your mind when you are doing your numbers are:

  • Are you going to be able to keep your doors open?
  • Are you going to meet your monthly income goal?
  • Are you going to be able to have a little bit more fun this month and splurge?
  • Will I be able to pay my monthly business and personal expenses?

…the list goes on for you personally.

Don’t Let Buyer’s REMORSE Stop You or Your Clients

This past week, I was contemplating how you are the culprit of your own success or failure. Unconsciously, you get in your own way of moving forward or making a shift happen that you want to see happen. I am guilty of it myself! Sometimes it takes a simple thing such as investing in yourself or your business to take it up a notch. I remember when I used to only take CASH or checks as payment from my clients…for 11 years, no less! Believe me, it limited me and I didn’t even realize it until I got myself a merchant account. We have to face it, we live in a world of convenience with debit cards and credit cards. Visa-Mastercard-credit-cardsThe minute I signed up for a merchant account, my healing business doubled. I made it convenient for my clients to pay me!…And no this wasn’t a PayPal account! It was a merchant account where I could process payments and set up recurring payments once I figured out that it was another convenience that I could provide for my clients. Hence, I made it EASY to do business with me, thus another way of providing great service.

Are you Coming From a Place of Service?

What does this mean? Most heart-centered entrepreneurs, whether you are a coach or some type of healer, will almost always answer YES. Here’s the deal, I want you to define service for your business. You as a consumer expect a certain level of service if you go out to a restaurant or even if you shop at a store. Well what does service look like for you as a consumer? It can mean what is the store’s return and exchange policy? How quickly is your food served to you? Well when you are dealing with the service industry, how do you expect the person who cuts your hair to respond to you or the place where you seek these type of personal services? What is the response time from the time that you contact them with a message if you can’t reach them on the first shot? What do you expect? Well, guess what…your clients/customers expect the same thing! They want to know when you are going to call them back, because they want to know that someone heard them or they might wonder if their phone message went into a big black hole.

Response time

When I got my first marketing and sales job working for Hewlett-Packard, one of the first things that they taught me is this: “We respond to our customers within 24 hours…and if we don’t have an answer for them, we let them know that we are working on the answer.” That practice never left me even after working for them for only 7 months and jilting HP for Motorola. I carried that practice over to Motorola, and you bet I carried it to my own healing business. When I hired an assistant several years ago to take over my client care services, the 24-hour response time practice was embedded in her as well.

The Personal Touch

Everyone loves to feel connected….even when it comes to business relationships. Being a healer, sometimes we forget to correspond to others not because we don’t want to, but if our practice is full, we don’t see how we can do one more thing. If your practice isn’t full it can be easier to do this. I have mentioned that it is important to set aside a day or some time where you do administrative work, which includes marketing. Part of marketing is keeping in touch with your peeps. You want them to come back, don’t you? So the way to keep in touch with your peeps is to write useful articles, put out a regular newsletter (you can determine the frequency), blog, and my favorite is to actually call and check-in with them. You might feel like it appears as a nuisance or slimy and don’t want to make the call, but believe me a call adds a personal touch. Sometimes, your clients get busy just like you and they have been thinking about calling you but it’s just one more thing on their list.
